Report of «Insecurity & Otherness» Conference

Monday 11 June 2007, by Lianos Michalis

imprimer

To our knowledge the first international conference on the issue, combining perspectives from various disciplines and bringing together academics from Europe and beyond. The conference was organised around five themes:

1) The Social Bond in the Multicultural Society: The Insecurity of Belonging

2) Egalitarianism as Discrimination

3) Dangerous Others and the Hegemony of Threat

4) Otherness as Empowerment

5) Personal Adequacy and Social Uncertainty

Keynote lectures were given by Robert Castel, Jock Young and Jacques Donzelot. The interdisciplinary approach of the conference and the diversity of a dense programme covered a very wide spectrum on the critique of the hegemony of the link that is being made between insecurity and otherness. Critiques of sociotechnological dispositifs, international institutional cooperation, public opinion, media representations, models of governance were combined with socioeconomic critiques of late modernity as an inherently insecure condition.

A publication plan is in place in order to submit possibly two peer-reviewed volumes.
