In September 2007 the German government confirmed media reports on security gaps in München airport. According to these reports, an unannounced inspection by auditors of the European Commission performed in May 2007 revealed that in the areas of competence of Lufthansa, LTU and Deutsche BA it has been possible to smuggle knives, weapons and explosive devices into security zones. The government furthermore confirmed that these incidents happened in spite of the fact that at least one airline had illicitly informed its employees in advance about the inspection, describing in detail how the checks will be carried out,, urging them to behave normal to keep the appearance of an «unannounced» check.
