Shared Responsibility: Towards a European Roma Policy

Vladimír Špidla at the conference ’Towards a European Roma Strategy – from commitments to results’ organized at the European Parliament on March 6, 2008 drew the attention to the importance that the integration of Roma has from the respect of the social cohesion of European societies. He emphasized that in the case of Roma «we are tackling not only discrimination against individuals but also the social exclusion of an ethnic group at collective level.» He spoke about the role played by the Commission in improving the Roma’s situation, about challenges faced in fields such as education, housing and employment of Roma and about the decisive role of Member States in effective implementation of policies and instruments that aim improving the Roma’s situation.
