Fear of terrorism has boosted the level of security measures in Sweden. Harbors and power plants have already undergone major changes, in order to prevent potential terrorist attacks. The time has now come to the municipality buildings, where the public is being physically closed off from its local decision makers.
Traditionally, the municipality buildings and town halls in southern Sweden (Småland) were characterized by their availability and openness, with the possibility to walk directly in to the local politicians. The idea was to avoid barriers between the public and the local authorities.
Major events or crisis have normally filled the municipal buildings with journalists and curious onlookers, which has allegedly obstructed the work for decision makers in critical situations. To avoid such situations, the buildings have now been installed with door openers, which enables the reception to control if a visitor has a valid reason to enter.
