Protection of national minorities

This factsheet reviews the activities of Council of Europe in the field of protection of national minorities, one of the main priorities of Council of Europe. Various legal instruments of Council of Europe are relevant from this respect, such as The European Convention on Human Rights, The Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities, The European Social Charter, The European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages. The monitoring mechanisms, the activities of The European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) as well as cooperation of Council of Europe with international organizations, national minorities and authorities also essentially contribute to the protection of national minorities.
