The European Year of Intercultural Dialogue 2008 recognises the unique advantage of Europe’s cultural diversity. In order to encourage Europeans to explore the benefits of our rich cultural heritage and to learn from different cultural traditions, a series of projects are being developed throughout this year at both European and Member States levels.

A new edition of FRA’s magazine Equal Voices deals with intercultural dialogue as a way to reap the benefits of diversity. Taking the European Year as a starting point, FRA’s magazine presents varied perspectives on intercultural dialogue, from EU Commissioner Jan Figel, world known novelist Paulo Coelho to intergovernmental organizations and civil society. The themes include intercultural education, cultural diversity in the media, inter-faith dialogue, and the role of civil society. While presenting varied insights and recommendations, the authors all agree that intercultural dialogue can play a central role in building a society, which is based on shared values, respect for diversity and learning from each other’s differences. The issue also includes a first interview with Morten Kjaerum, who as of 1 June 2008 will be the Agency’s Director.
