Amnesty International’s ten-point human rights programme for the Slovenian Presidency of the European Union : critical review instead of complacency

In a briefing (available at www.amnesty-eu.org) that has been handed over to the French government, Amnesty International highlights key challenges for the next six months, such as the need to ensure that the rights of refugees, asylum seekers and migrants are fully respected.

In this particular area, Amnesty International is very concerned with the EU directive on the return of irregular migrants, currently being discussed, which foresees detention of up to 18 months for people who have not committed a crime. The organisation is also concerned with France’s apparent intention through a «Migration and Asylum Pact,» to propose principles which favour a repressive approach over a comprehensive vision.
