Iñaki Rivera is graduate in Law (University of Barcelona, 1985), Masters (1989) by the "Common Study Programme on Criminal Justice and Critical Criminology" of Cooperación Inter-Universitaria Europea (composed by six University Centers of the UE), with a Thesis dedicated to the examination of the Courts of Penitentiary Monitoring in Spain, written and defended in English before a Commission integrated by Professors Drs. Alessandro Baratta (University of Saarbrucken, Germany), Jock Young (Middlesex Polithecnic, United Kingdom) and Roberto Bergalli (University of Barcelona, Spain).

He is Doctor in Law (University of Barcelona, 1993) with a Doctoral Thesis dedicated to the examination of the fundamental rights of the inmates in Spain and in the Council of Europe, which obtained the qualification of Excellent Cum Laude. It was defended before a Court integrated by Profs . Francisco Tomás y Valiente, Santiago Mir Puig (Universidad de Barcelona), Angel de Sola Dueñas (Universidad de Barcelona), Massimo Pavarini (Università degli Studi di Bologna) y Carlos García Valdés (Universidad de Alcalá).

He is author of 13 books (as author or co-author) dedicated to the Penitentiary Law, History and Sociology of Prison and to the Criminology and Criminal Policy; he is also author of more than 100 works articles and essays published in several academic works in Spain, Europe and Latin America.

He has been Guest Professor at several Universities of Italy, United Kingdom, Greece, Portugal and Germany (in Europe), Argentina, Mexico and Peru (in Latin America).

In addition to the synthesized academic activity, he has practiced as a Lawyer for eleven years (being member of the School of Lawyers of Barcelona); also dedicated to the exercise of the penitentiary law, he contributed to the setting up of the first court-appointed counsel in Catalonia.
