April 2009 Monthly monitor on the EU employment situation and social outlook

«Although companies across Europe are continuing to make substantial job reductions, there has been a fall-off in the number of announced job losses in March compared to previous months. Nevertheless, as overall business and consumer confidence remain at low levels, further deterioration in the labour market situation can be expected in the coming months. Unemployment rates have been rising in all EU countries except the Netherlands and the Czech Republic in February. The European Commission’s April 2009 monthly monitoring report includes a special focus on financial services, the sector at the origin of the current downturn and one of the most seriously hit by job losses, as well as a supplement with the standard quarterly review of EU labour market developments.»
