Addressing violent radicalization is part of a comprehensive action programme on the fight against terrorism, the aim of which is to prevent the spreading of ideas and views conducive to acts of terrorism. In this Communication, the Commission reports on its ongoing work in this area and proposes possible ways in which EU policies could be channeled more effectively in order to address the issue. Aware of a the long term nature of its strategy, the Commission’s immediate focus is on broadcast media, internet, education, youth engagement, employment, social exclusion and integrations issues, equal opportunities and non-discrimination and inter-cultural dialogue. The ultimate objective of the Commission is to create a European citizenship, an inter-cultural understanding and to foster cross-cultural and inter-religious understanding between Europe and third-countries, particularly those in which Islam is predominant.
