1 Place du Congrès, B-1000 Brussels

The Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS) and the Faculty of Law of the University of Maastricht are pleased to invite you to participate in the Conference «Non-Discriminating Europe - Towards Equality on Grounds of Race, Ethnic Origin, Religion and Belief?»which will be organized on the 24th and 25th April in Brussels.

The Conference aims at providing an assessment of the EU framework on non-discrimination and its two key policy ingredients: the Council Directive implementing the Principle of Equal Treatment between Persons irrespective of Racial or Ethnic Origin, 2000/43/EC of 19 June 2000 and the Council Directive establishing a General Framework for Equal Treatment in Employment and Occupation, 2000/78/EC of 27 November 2000. It will offer awareness of their scope and the way in which they offer protection to the individual as regards grounds of discrimination related to race, ethnic origin, religion and belief.

The Conference will also address the most recent developments regarding the implementation of the Directives in the national legislation of the EU Member States. Comparisons with other international instruments regarding race discrimination will be drawn. Possible case strategies before national courts in the different Member States and at the European level will be equally discussed. This event is thus designed to offer direct insights into possible litigation strategies, national implementations and legal problems.

You may find attached the programme of the event. In case you would be interested in attending, please send me the registration form hereby attached before the 21st April 2006 via e-mail to sergio carrera or by fax (0032-02-2194151).
