Infrad red 3D facial scanning is a new biometric system that has high accuracy and scans for illnesses like SARS because it includes temperature scannings.

It is also reputed to be a remote, non-invasive way of capturing biometric data without the need for touching the individual concerned (unlike finger/hand prints and iris scanning). The camera is operated automatically and does not come into contact with individuals or particles and therefore cannot be affected by body oils or particles according to the inventors.

The same technology can be used to verify who accesses the databases storing the collected images.

The system is a Danish invention and has won a European Information and Society Technology 2006 prize.
