  • Leading surveillance societies in the EU and the World

    A report on surveillance societies around the world conducted by Privacy International shows which states have the best data privacy protection, and which are the most surveilled. Germany falls into the former category. The UK joins Russia and Malaysia, inter alia, in the latter.
  • Privacy International forges coalition to call on European Parliament to reject data retention

    Text of a letter sent to Members of the European Parliament on 6 December, calling on them to reject the draft Directive on data retention, as its adoption «would cause an irreversible shift in civil liberties within the European Union. It will adversely affect consumer rights throughout Europe. And it will generate an unprecedented obstacle to the global competitiveness of European industry.»
  • What is Wrong With Europe? Privacy International Report Criticises EU anti-terror policies

    In a report released today Privacy International, a London-based watchdog organisation, compares the anti-terrorism approaches in the U.S. with those in Europe. It finds that on every policy involving mass surveillance of its citizens, the EU is prepared to go well beyond what the U.S. Government finds acceptable and palatable, and violate the privacy of citizens.
  • Lettre à la Présidence britannique de l’UE au sujet de la rétention de données

    Au nom des organisations European Digital Rights et Privacy International, nous souhaiterions exprimer notre tristesse et notre colère face aux attentats terroristes survenus à Londres le 7 juillet. Nous comprenons la difficulté d’assurer la sûreté de tous les citoyens et résidents, tout en garantissant dans le même temps tous les autres droits de l’homme, y compris leur droit à une vie privée. Nous comprenons également et nous appuyons les efforts constants nécessaires à la prévention de tels attentats. Toutefois, au vu des intentions de la Présidence britannique du Conseil de l’Union européenne de répondre aux attentats par une procédure urgente du Conseil Justice et Affaires intérieures, afin d’adopter rapidement un projet de Décision cadre permettant une surveillance totale des communications, nous appelons respectueusement à la retenue.
