The number of people claiming asylum in Britain has jumped by 16% in a year, official government figures revealed today. Record numbers of people are also being granted British citizenship, the Home Office said.

Home Office letter concerning the launch of the Border and Immigration Agency. Regional offices, designed to deliver a series of joined-up immigration services, will be set up throughout the UK. A new regulator will be responsible for overall efficiency of the agency and will publish regional comparisons which will allow the public to see how the agency is performing.

On Thursday 15 September, the Home Secretary sent draft clauses of the Terrorism Bill to the main Opposition party spokesmen, the relevant Parliamentary Committee chairs and Lord Carlile of Berriew in his capacity as independent reviewer of the Terrorism Act 2000.
