  • EU survey of minorities and immigrants sheds new light on extent of racism in EU

    The European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) today releases results of the first ever EU-wide survey on immigrant and ethnic minority groups’ experiences of discrimination and racist crime. The survey reveals that discrimination, harassment and racially motivated violence are far more widespread than recorded in official statistics. The results suggest a sense of resignation among ethnic minorities and immigrants who appear to lack confidence in mechanisms to protect victims.
  • Homophobia and Discrimination on Grounds of Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity in the EU Member States

    The EU Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA) published on 31 March 2009 its new report «Homophobia and Discrimination on Grounds of Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity in the EU Member States: Part II - The Social Situation». The report finds that discrimination, harassment and violence against LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) persons are widespread throughout the EU.
  • Leading European rights agencies concerned by continuing discrimination of and violence against Roma - International Roma Day 8 April

    In a joint statement issued on the occasion of International Roma Day (8 April), four leading European human rights bodies today expressed deep concern about the continuing discriminatory treatment and exclusion of the Roma. The statement was released by the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA), the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) and the OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities (HCNM)

    The Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA) today presents a new report on ‘Developing indicators for the protection, respect and promotion of the rights of the child in the European Union’. This proposes a comprehensive series of indicators to measure child rights across the EU.

    This article, on the occasion of the Human Rights Day on the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, addresses the question of human rights in the context of current global financial crisis. It discusses the possible human rights implications of the economic crisis.
  • FRA opinion on the proposal for a Council framework decision on the use of Passenger Name Record (PNR)

    Following the request of the French Presidency, FRA presented an opinion on the Commission’s proposal for a Council framework decision on the use of Passenger Name Record (PNR) data for law enforcement purposes. This opinion provides an overview of relevant fundamental rights issues focusing on the right to respect of private life, the right to data protection and the prohibition of discrimination.
  • Discrimination against Roma children

    20 October 2008
    The European Court of Human Rights judged that there has been discrimination against Roma children in education in a region near Athens. It ruled that the conditions of school enrolment for Roma children and their placement in special preparatory classes because of their Roma origin – in an annex to the main school building – constituted discrimination.

  • Incident report: Violent attacks against Roma in the Ponticelli District of Naples, Italy

    The report provides information on the impact of the recent events in the Ponticelli district of Naples on Roma, immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers. It brings together the basic facts on these violent attacks as well as background information regarding the situation of Roma in Italy. It also describes efforts to address the situation by the Italian Authorities and the International Community, in particular the European Parliament, the Council of Europe, the OSCE, and Civil society organisations.
  • Agency for Fundamental Rights : Annual Report 2008

    The Annual Report 2008 is the first to be produced on the basis of the FRA legal base and mandate (Council Regulation 168//2007, art. 4.1(e)). It covers information, events and developments related to racism and xenophobia in the EU for the year 2007, which was the Agency’s focus of work prior to the adoption of its Multiannual Framework in February 2008.
