• Gestion des frontières : entre liberté et sécurité

  Députés européens, nationaux et experts ont débattu ce lundi de la gestion des frontières européennes, et du nécessaire équilibre entre liberté et sécurité, alors que le Parlement examinera prochainement plusieurs propositions visant à consolider l’édifice né de l’ouverture des frontières et du régime de Schengen. Les députés entendent veiller au respect des droits fondamentaux et de la vie privée.

• La Commission adopte le troisième rapport annuel sur les réalisations en matière de justice, de liberté et de sécurité

  La Commission a adopté ce jour son troisième rapport annuel (également nommé « tableau de bord ») sur la mise en oeuvre du programme de La Haye, qui fait le point sur les avancées des politiques menées en matière de liberté, de sécurité et de justice. Le programme de La Haye, qui couvre la période 2005-2009, a pris la suite de celui de Tampere, mis en oeuvre entre 1999 et 2004. Le tableau de bord 2007 évalue les progrès accomplis dans la réalisation des mesures prévues dans le plan d’action de La Haye pour l’année 2007.

• Commission adopts the third annual report on achievements in Justice, Freedom and Security policies

  Today, the Commission adopted the third annual report on the implementation of the Hague Programme on achievements in Justice, Freedom and Security policies, also referred to as the Scoreboard. The Hague Programme, which covers 2005-2009, is the successor of the Tampere Programme which covered the period 1999-2004. The 2007 Scoreboard assesses progress made vis-à-vis actions envisaged in the Hague Action plan for 2007.

• Abu Qatada released from prison

  The radical Abu Qatada has variously been described as a «truly dangerous individual» and a «key UK figure» in al-Qaida-related activity by those in anti-terrorist circles who have studied his work and words. Qatada, who was released from prison last night on strict bail conditions including a 22-hour curfew, became one of the UK’s most wanted men in December 2001, when he went on the run on the eve of government moves to introduce new anti-terror laws allowing suspects to be detained without charge or trial.

• ’Bomb plot’ wife gave false name

  A suspected airline bomb plotter’s wife has told a jury she gave police a false name and lied to protect her fugitive husband’s identity. Zora Siddique said she had initially given her cousin’s name to officers and had failed to reveal Mohammed Gulzar’s identity because he was a wanted man. Prosecutors allege that Mr Gulzar and others plotted to smuggle liquid bombs disguised as drinks on to planes.

• Muslims may not have to undergo sniffer dog checks in UK

  Muslim passengers may not be touched by sniffer dogs of the British Transport Police after complaints that the practice is against Islam. According to the religion, dogs are deemed to be spiritually «unclean». A Transport Department report has raised the prospect that animals should only touch passengers’ luggage because it is considered «more acceptable», the Daily Express reported.

• Crown presents strong e-mail evidence in Khawaja case

  The strongest evidence in the case of the first man charged under Canada’s antiterrorism act was revealed in court – emails he wrote over the course of a year prior to his arrest. Mohammad Mowin Khawaja, 29, wrote messages to conspirators in Britain referring to detonation devices, routing recruits to a house in Pakistan, as well as ways to send money and night-vision goggles to insurgents in Afghanistan.

• Netherlands Re-Arrests Freed Terrorist Suspect

  Dutch authorities re-arrested a Pakistani suspect that had been previously released in April, who will now be extradited to Spain. Dutch authorities released the man because there was insufficient evidence that he was involved in planning a terrorist attack; however, a Spanish magistrate issued an international arrest warrant against the man. The man is allegedly part of a jihad network planning to launch attacks in Spain, France, Portugal, Germany, and England.

The entry into force of the Directive is envisaged before the end of 2008.

The article follows a 48-year-old Belgian woman named Malika El Aroud, who posts on the internet under the pseudonym «Oum Obeyda,» who while she does not disseminate instructions on how to make bombs nor intends to take part in violence herself, post encourages and «bullies» Muslim men to fight.
