    22 July 2008, by MIREM
The inventory of all the standard bilateral readmission agreements, concluded by each of the 27 EU Member States, would not suffice to provide an overall picture of the various mechanisms and cooperative instruments that have emerged, over the last decade, to sustain the removal or expulsion of illegally staying third-country nationals.
  • Minutes of the CHALLENGE Training school : Migration, Visas and Asylum: Social, legal, political and economic issues

15 July 2008, by Carrapiço Helena, Faure Atger Anaïs, Mir Miriam
Since Maastricht, the issue of a common EU policy on the movement of third-country nationals into and across the EU has made its way steadily up the political agenda. The issue finds itself high on the priority lists of nearly all EU Council presidencies and forms part of the Strategic Objectives of the Barroso Commission. Yet the ‘migration dossier’ is highly complex as it comprises a considerable number of different facets, making it nearly impossible to find a «one size fits all» approach.
  • Proposal for a European Pact on Immigration and asylum

15 July 2008, by European Presidency
The European Council considers that the time has come to provide a new impetus, in a spirit of mutual responsibility and solidarity between Member States and also of partnership with third countries, to the definition of a common immigration and asylum policy that will take account of both the collective interest of the European Union and the specific needs of each Member State.
  • Development v. Terrorism — migrant remittances or terrorist financing?

8 July 2008, by Vlcek William
This paper discusses recent developments in the campaign to combat terrorist financing in Europe and the intersection of these with the flow of migrant remittances from the Members States of the European Union to Third Countries. New regimes of control within the European Union (EU) towards migration affect more than just those seeking entry to Europe. Migrants frequently leave behind families that they expect to support from their earnings once they secure employment at their final destination.

    1er juillet 2008, par Migreurop

  • Borders Observatory

    1 July 2008, by Migreurop
The project of creating a « European Borders Observatory » aims at fostering non-governmental information on the situation of migrants at the borders, at denouncing violations of rights committed there, at promoting those rights, and thus improving the consideration for fundamental rights in the immigration policies of both transit and host countries.

  • Integration and Immigration: The Vicissitudes of Dutch ‘inburgering’

    24 June 2008, by Besselink Leonard F. M.
The Netherlands has set an example to a range of other EU Member States in devising measures to integrate immigrants not only as a goal in itself, but as part of a restrictive migration policy. This essay describes the vicissitudes of ‘integration programmes’ (inburgering) in the Netherlands. It focuses on law, and we reflect in particular on the legislation through which these programmes were to be enforced.

  • Taking forward the common immigration and asylum policy for Europe

23 June 2008, by European Commission
Today the Commission adopted a Communication on «A Common immigration policy for Europe: principles, actions and tools» and a Policy Plan «Asylum – an integrated approach to protection across the EU». The Communication puts forward ten Common Principles on which to base the common immigration policy, grouped under the three main strands of EU policy: prosperity, solidarity and security. The Policy Plan on Asylum provides for the architecture of the second phase of the Common European Asylum System (CEAS). Both address the remaining elements on immigration and asylum of The Hague Programme. They should be endorsed by the European Council of 15 October 2008 and will, in the course of 2009, feed into a new five-year Programme in the Justice, Freedom and Security area.
