  • A new era of EU youth policies

    The Commission has adopted a new EU strategy for youth policy for the coming decade. Entitled «Youth – Investing and Empowering», the new strategy acknowledges the fact that (1) young people are one of the most vulnerable groups in society, especially in the current economic and financial crisis, and (2) in our ageing society, young people are a precious resource.
  • EU survey of minorities and immigrants sheds new light on extent of racism in EU

    The European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) today releases results of the first ever EU-wide survey on immigrant and ethnic minority groups’ experiences of discrimination and racist crime. The survey reveals that discrimination, harassment and racially motivated violence are far more widespread than recorded in official statistics. The results suggest a sense of resignation among ethnic minorities and immigrants who appear to lack confidence in mechanisms to protect victims.

    Although companies across Europe are continuing to make substantial job reductions, there has been a fall-off in the number of announced job losses in March compared to previous months. Nevertheless, as overall business and consumer confidence remain at low levels, further deterioration in the labour market situation can be expected in the coming months.
  • Leading European rights agencies concerned by continuing discrimination of and violence against Roma - International Roma Day 8 April

    In a joint statement issued on the occasion of International Roma Day (8 April), four leading European human rights bodies today expressed deep concern about the continuing discriminatory treatment and exclusion of the Roma. The statement was released by the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA), the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) and the OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities (HCNM)

    The Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA) today presents a new report on ‘Developing indicators for the protection, respect and promotion of the rights of the child in the European Union’. This proposes a comprehensive series of indicators to measure child rights across the EU.

    The report of the European Commission presents the main developments, the challenges and policy orientations concerning the progress toward gender equality. It states that while there were positive developments in this regard, especially in respect of employment, still there are shortcomings in respect of gender equality in several areas.
  • Joint Report on Social Protection and Social Inclusion 2009

    The Joint Report examines the Member States’ integrated national strategies on social inclusion, pensions, healthcare and long-term care. It reviews the main trends across the EU and at national level and is the outcome of a process involving the European Commission and the Council. Most of the work involves the Social Protection Committee (a group of high-level officials established in 2000 to serve as a vehicle for cooperative exchange between the Commission and the Member States).
  • Strengthening Security and Fundamental Freedoms on the Internet - an EU Policy on the Fight Against Cyber Crime

    This study examines the human rights aspects of the Internet, and looks in detail at the relevant criminal law rules of the Council of Europe and the EU. It also examines other aspects of the issue of cyber-crime, such as data protection rights, the EU’s Safer Internet programme, child pornography, attacks on information systems, terrorism, racism and xenophobia.
  • Statement of the officers of the ILO governing body

  • Workers’ rights strengthened amid gloomy economic statistics

    Current statistics confirm that the economic crisis is affecting growth and jobs throughout the EU. Industrial new orders were down by 6.3% in October compared with September and the real agricultural income per worker was down by 4.3% in 2008 compared with 2007.The EU external trade deficit in October amounted to €17.1bn. To restore confidence and mitigate the effects of the crisis on the real economy, the Quarterly Report on the Euro Area emphasised that a swift and coordinated implementation of the European Economic Recovery Plan is necessary.
