On the occasion of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the FRA joins in to commemorate the six million Jewish and all the other victims of the Holocaust. Paying tribute to the victims, we must remember that the wider lessons of the Holocaust remain sadly relevant today. In today’s Europe, some people still risk paying with their life for their religion, ethnic origin, sexual orientation or a disability. Political leaders, governments and the society at large must remain determined in their fight against anti-Semitism, racism and all other forms for intolerance.

The book shows how german researchers and unionists are entering in a process of change concerning theyr attitude towards the unstable, precarious forms of labour. Inspired by the example of US-unions, european unions are trying since a few years to organize precarious employees in various economical sectors. These groups are not spontanouesly interesseted or motivated by organizing themselves, but may be reached throughout specific campaigns. The text takes part in a highe public debate concerning «flexicurity» in the EU.

The french agreement, called « Modernizing the labour market », has been signed at the 11the of January 2008. Most observers presents it as the french way to flexicurity. The agreement contents new rules to dismiss employees more easyly. The main innovation is the flexible definition of the « testing time » after a new engagement. Another innovation is the possibility to put a end to a contract without dismissial if the employee/worker agrees.

The author compares several inquiries about precarious labour in France and Europe since 1993. At this time, a huge majority of all jobs were considered as « stable » when only 8% of all working contracts were clearly precarious (the so called « bad jobs »). Today, these distinction is no longer as significant as it was, for the stable contracts are hiding precarious working situations including stress and other forms of social pressure.
