  • Political reactions on social change

    The study underlies the strong political effects of competition and social change in Germany. The various reactions on the whole Reform-process may be subdivided into three main attitudes and groups. The first group is very well qualified and has Job security; the second one represents the social center; the third is directly threatened by the economic and social effects of global change. The documents sho that the middle class feels very concerned about social change.
  • Class-action law suit against data retention planned in Germany

    After implementing legislation of the EU data retention directive has passed German Parliament on 9.11.2007, a mass class-action challenging this act before the German Constitutional Court is currently under preparation. In a press release of the German privacy NGO Arbeitskreis Vorratsdatenspeicherung it is stated that until 16.11.2007 already 13.000 citizens have joined this class-action which is unprecedented in German constitutional law.
  • A FRA youth event «Diversity day» on 14 November 2007

    Equality, non-discrimination and anti-racism are the themes at Diversity Day, a youth event organised on 14 November 2007 in Vienna. Under the theme «chancen=gleich», Diversity Day seeks to make young people aware of the objectives of the 2007 European Year of Equal Opportunities for All. The event is open to the public and will gather around 1,500 young people from Vienna and neighbouring Hungarian towns.
  • FRA’s European Round Table Conference (ERTC) on 29-30 October

    «FRA organises the European Round Table Conference (ERTC) on 29-30 October in Lisbon to bring together key stakeholders to discuss Equal access to education and employment for youth with migrant background. The participants will come from governments, local authorities, academics, civil society, international and regional organisations and European institutions.
  • The European Parliament of Equal Opportunities for All

    The European Parliament and European Commission in the framework of the «2007 European Year of Equal Opportunities for All» organized «The European Parliament of Equal Opportunities for All» conference on 11-12 October 2007 in Brussels. Participants from EU institutions, national and regional authorities, civil society and universities discussed at the conference the European Union’s strategy to combat discrimination. The conference focused on the impact and the effectiveness of European anti-discrimination legislation.
  • US Supreme Court refuses to hear El-Masri Case

    On 9th October 2007 the US Supreme Court refused to hear an appeal filed on behalf of the German citizen of Lebanese descent Khaled el-Masri. He claims to have been abducted by US agents and then tortured by them while imprisoned in Afghanistan. The fate of Mr el-Masri has been subject to intensive scrutiny in the investigations of the Council of Europe and the European Parliament on the involvement of European authorities in CIA activities on European territory. Represented by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) Mr el-Masri had brought a lawsuit in US federal courts against George Tenet, director of the CIA from 1997 to 2004, seeking damages for illegal treatment.

    Following the accession to the EU of Bulgaria and Romania the gypsies or Roma have become Europe’s largest ethnic minority. An estimated eight to ten million Roma live here – most of them in Eastern Europe. While on paper they enjoy the same rights as other citizens, their social and political situation remains precarious.
  • Bernhard Schlink on the renewed German debate on shooting down hijacked planes

    A new discussion on the legality and legitimacy of shooting down a hijacked passenger plane that might be used to attack objects on the ground was sparked last week (16.9.-21.9.2007) in Germany. It started with a statement of German Minister of Defense, Franz Josef Jung that he would have to order such a shooting in the worst case scenario relying on the concept of a ‘supra-legal state of emergency’ .

    Das Bundesamt für Verfassungsschutz hat im vergangenen Jahr in zehn Fällen den Einsatz eines so genannten IMSI-Catchers angeordnet, mit dem der Standort sowie die Geräte- und Kartennummer von aktiv geschalteten Mobilfunkgeräten festgestellt werden können. Dies geht aus einer Unterrichtung durch das Parlamentarische Kontrollgremium über «Maßnahmen nach dem Terrorismusbekämpfungsgesetz» hervor.
